Texas
Holdem Poker mania is gripping the country. Shows like Celebrity Poker and
ESPN poker tournaments are turning couch potatoes into poker players.
The poker phenomena has even taken over the University of Arizona. For the first time ever, the student union is running weekly poker tournaments. No gambling or betting is allowed. Participating underage students simply play for fun. But will this new trend create a new crop of problem gamblers? Don Hulen, President of the Arizona Council on Compulsive Gambling, says, "Is it a bad thing? I don't think so. Is it going to cause problems? I don't think it will cause any more problems than passing games, at-risk games for young people have ever done. It's something they'll eventually mature out of." Experts say it's not the gambling that causes problems; it's the gambler. They also say it helps immensely that the UA gives fliers to all Texas Holdem poker players informing them what problem behavior to look out for. |
